On the banks of the mighty river Dee and at the heart of the Cairngorms National Park lies Braemar, surrounded by some of Scotland’s highest mountains.
At the centre of the ancient Scottish Kingdom of Marr, it has witnessed murder, rebellion and intrigue. The royal connection continues to this day and the village is ideally located to use as a base for expeditions to Balmoral Castle.
The village also boasts two castles, the first which is now a ruin protected the ford at the river crossing to the village and the second Braemar Castle originally built in 1628 by the Earl of Marr and was fortified during the Jackobite Rebellions of 17 15 and 1745 . It has recently been restored and is now run by the local community as a visitor attraction Braemar Castle.
Our majestic mountains, and unique wildlife habitats can be explored on foot (www.braemarmountainsports.com) with, if you wish, expert guides (www.walkdeeside.com) or why not try an exciting Landrover Safari Braemar Highland Safaris to see the deer and other wildlife in their mountain environment.
